Drug addiction is a serious problem in America and around the world, and because of that, a lot is being said about it every day. People of different backgrounds say different things about addiction. While some people have very vital and important facts to give about drug addiction, many others just say things they can neither verify nor prove.
Here are four of the dumbest things some people say about drug addiction.
1. Marijuana leads to drug addiction
This is one claim many people make but cannot verify. While it is true that marijuana is dangerous to the body if consumed excessively, its link with addiction cannot quite be traced. Research shows that other prescription drugs like Adderall rather lead people more to addiction, and are quite accessible and affordable.
2. Addictive drugs fry your brain
Some people are of the opinion that the drugs you get addiction to fry your brain. This kind of insinuates that addictive drugs cause permanent damage to the brain. That is not true though because research has proven that addicts can make a full recovery from their addiction and lead much better lives than before they got addicted.
3. Drug addiction is sometimes faked to get attention
People who lay such a claim do not really understand addiction. Some addicts may actually seem to act their addiction, but there is proof that this is the result of them dealing with the difficult situation. It takes a lot of bravery to accept addiction, so it helps to support addicts rather than challenge them.
4. All drug addicts have the same story
This is another false claim from people who know very little or nothing about drug addiction. The general perception is that addicts hit a rock bottom before they seek recovery. But that is not true. There are cases of people who seek help because their addiction almost killed them; others seek help after being arrested for example. Drug addiction stories may have a similar pattern, but they are not all the same.
Drug addiction is not something people can be proud of, so it is not prudent to say just anything about the phenomenon. The best thing any individual can do is at least fact check what they say about addiction. It is better to not say anything at all if you are going to say dumb things about drug addiction. A drug addict may be standing right next to you and you never can tell how what you say will affect them.
